Sunday Sermon-What is the Gospel?

How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss,
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen One,
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice,
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

How Deep The Father’s Love For Us lyrics by Stuart Townend

Today’s text:

Colossians 1:3 We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; 5 because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth; 7 as you also learned from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, 8 who also declared to us your love in the Spirit.

The focus of the book of Colossians is the pre-eminence of Christ, and Paul was thankful that the church at Colosse was doing well.

What is the Gospel?
1) It is indeed Good News, Eternal News.
2) It is the message of Jesus Christ that we receive through faith.
3) It is a message of life-changing truth, enabling us to love the saints with agape’ love.
4) It is a message of hope; hope that is as certain as if it were already received.
5) It is a message that is universally effective, bringing forth fruit.
